overstockArt review (2026): the only store here that ships a hand-painted oil this week
A scored review of overstockArt: paintings held in stock in Wichita, $99 entry, framed and ready to hang in days — and no photo before it ships.
Oil Painting ReproductionsUpdated

The short answer
Editors' rating 6.4 of 10, sixth in our ranking. It is the only store here that keeps hand-painted oils in stock: $99 entry, dispatched within 24 hours, framed in Wichita. The trade-off is no approval photo and international shipping quoted after you order.

Pros
- The only store here that holds hand-painted oils in stock: dispatched in 24 hours, delivered in 3 to 5 business days
- The cheapest verified entry price in this survey, $99 for a hand-painted 8 by 10 in canvas
- Frames made in-house in Wichita, free stretching, hanging hardware fitted
- A 45-day guarantee with three outcomes including a cash refund, and free return shipping on exchanges within the contiguous US
- A staffed US telephone line, live chat and a physical address you can look up
Cons
- No approval photograph on catalogue paintings, and repeat copies differ slightly from the listing image
- International shipping is quoted only after you place the order
- The canvas fibre is never named, and the paintings' country of origin is never stated
- 3.7 on Trustpilot, the lowest counted rating of the eight, on a sample of 169
- Custom-size and custom art orders need a non-refundable 50% deposit and cannot be returned
- Best for
- A US buyer who wants a genuinely hand-painted oil, framed and on the wall within the week, at the lowest entry price here.
- Better alternative
- If you want your own canvas photographed and approved before it ships, Art & See is the better pick on the photo-approval criterion: overstockArt offers an approval image only on custom art, because a catalogue painting already exists and may differ slightly from the listing photograph, while Art & See photographs every piece and holds it until you agree. It also publishes free worldwide shipping with the duty position explained, where an overseas courier bill here is quoted only after you have ordered.

The verdict
Every other store in this survey starts painting when you press the button. overstockArt has already painted it. "Your painting usually gets shipped to you within 24 hours (on weekdays). If you choose FedEx Ground as your shipping method, it will arrive within 3 to 5 business days." That single sentence explains the entry price of $99, the 45-day satisfaction guarantee, the American phone number answered between 9 and 6 Central, and every one of the compromises below.
The compromises are real. There is no photograph before shipping, because there is nothing to photograph that you have not already seen — the piece exists, and the store says plainly that repeat copies of the same painting differ slightly from one another. There is no stated canvas fibre, only "artist grade canvas". And there is no published origin for the paintings themselves; the frames are "proudly handcrafted in the USA", the canvases are explained only as something the company has "an unmatched ability to purchase at a low price".

"100% hand painted oil painting on artist grade canvas" - a grade, not a fibre; no page read on 2026-09-05 says linen or cotton.
The only store of the eight that ships from stock: "Your painting usually gets shipped to you within 24 hours (on weekdays) ... it will arrive within 3 to 5 business days", with custom art quoted separately at 8 weeks.
Approval photos exist only for made-to-order work: "For custom art orders we provide you with an image to approve making you part of the quality control process." Catalogue paintings ship without one, because they are already painted.
45 days with three named outcomes - exchange, store credit valid one year, or a cash refund; return shipping is free for exchanges and credit inside the contiguous US, while a cash refund can carry a $10-$100 return shipping fee. Custom, custom-size and clearance items are excluded.
Gallery-wrapped versions are sold as their own listings (for example "Two Cypresses Gallery Wrap") rather than as an option on each painting, and the returns page warns that "self gallery wrapping" voids the policy.
Frames are priced beside the painting, stretching is free when a frame is bought, and the finished piece arrives with hanging hardware fitted: "we stretch your painting on stretcher bars. Then we frame the painting and put all the necessary hardware."
Clear inside the US - "free FedEx Ground shipping on all orders over $50 or more within the contiguous United States" - but international buyers are quoted after ordering: "just choose your country's shipping option and you will be contacted and quoted for our cost of shipment."
TrustScore 3.7 from 169 reviews.
The frames are placed - "Every framed canvas is chopped, joined, stretched, and finished with care, all proudly handcrafted in the USA" - but the paintings are not; the FAQ explains low prices as "an unmatched ability to purchase paintings at a low price", which implies buying finished work without saying from where.
"Need a different size?" sits under the six standard sizes on the product page; the FAQ adds that custom work is quoted by email, takes 8 weeks, and requires "a down payment of half up front for the artist to start work (this is non-refundable)". Custom-size orders cannot be returned or exchanged.
What it costs
Nothing else here starts at $99 for a hand-painted oil, and the top of the ladder, $349 for 36 by 48 inches, is below where most competitors' entry sizes land once you add a frame. Two things make that possible: the painting is bought in volume and held in stock rather than commissioned, and shipping is free only inside the contiguous United States. An international buyer pays a quoted courier bill on top, and the FAQ warns that "framed items cost much more to ship as shipping cost is based on dimensional weight", recommending you buy unframed and frame locally. Outside the US, that advice quietly removes the store's best feature. See how much oil painting reproductions cost for the comparison.
Strengths and weaknesses
- Days, not weeks. Dispatch within 24 hours and delivery in 3 to 5 business days is unmatched here, and it is the only store that can save a forgotten anniversary.
- A real returns desk. A US phone number, staffed hours, RMA numbers, and free return shipping on exchanges and credit within the contiguous US.
- Framing done in-house, with free stretching and hardware fitted, at the lowest prices in this survey.
- The cheapest verified entry price, $99, for something genuinely hand-painted rather than printed.
- No approval photograph on catalogue stock. You buy the painting the photograph represents, and the store says openly that no two copies are identical.
- No canvas fibre and no country of origin. For a store this specific about its frames, both silences stand out.
- International shipping is a surprise. You order, then you are contacted with a price. Every other store here publishes a worldwide figure, usually zero.
- 3.7 on Trustpilot. The lowest counted rating of the eight, on a sample large enough that it means something.
The 3.7 deserves context rather than dismissal. It sits on 169 reviews, which is the second-largest sample here, so unlike the stores with five or seven reviews it is measuring something real. A stock model also invites a specific complaint that made-to-order stores never face: the painting you receive is a different copy from the one photographed, and the FAQ concedes that "when we receive more than one unit of the same painting there is always a small difference between each of them". If a faithful match to the listing photograph is what you want, that is a structural risk here, not a lapse.
Who it is for
Buy here if you are in the United States, you want a hand-painted oil rather than a print, you want it framed, and you want it this week. It is also the sensible entry point for a first purchase at low stakes: at $99 to $179 with a 45-day guarantee and free return shipping on an exchange, the cost of being wrong is small. Business and hospitality buyers get a trade desk and volume options.
Look elsewhere if you are outside North America, if you want a specific painting rather than a stocked one, or if you want to see your own canvas before it ships. Made-to-order stores take weeks but they photograph the result: 1st Art Gallery and HandmadePiece both do, and Art & See sends a photograph for approval before dispatch with free worldwide shipping quoted at zero rather than after the fact. Is overstockArt legitimate?
Yes, and it is the easiest of the eight to verify: a working address in Wichita, Kansas, a staffed toll-free number, a published returns procedure with RMA numbers, and 169 Trustpilot reviews. It is not connected to Overstock.com, as its own FAQ states.
How fast does overstockArt ship?
Catalogue paintings usually leave the facility within 24 hours on weekdays and arrive in 3 to 5 business days by FedEx Ground in the contiguous US, or 3 to 6 days in Canada. Custom art is quoted separately at around 8 weeks.
Are overstockArt paintings really hand-painted?
The store states so unambiguously: "The oil paintings on this website are entirely hand made. They are not machine generated." A certificate of authenticity ships with every painting. What it does not state is the canvas fibre or where the paintings are painted.
Do they send a photo before shipping?
Only on custom art. Catalogue paintings are already made, so what you see is the listing photograph — and the FAQ warns that repeat copies of the same painting differ slightly from one another, which is the honest consequence of a stock model.
What does overstockArt cost to ship internationally?
Unknown until after you order. Free FedEx Ground applies to orders over $50 within the contiguous US; international buyers choose a country option and are "contacted and quoted". Duties are the buyer's, and the FAQ recommends buying unframed abroad because framed parcels cost much more to ship.
Can I return an overstockArt painting?
Within 45 days, with a choice of exchange, store credit valid for a year, or a cash refund. Return shipping is free for exchanges and credit inside the contiguous US; a cash refund can carry a $10 to $100 return shipping fee and take up to 30 days. Custom, custom-size and clearance items cannot be returned.
