The best oil painting reproduction companies (2026): our ranking, and the ten criteria behind it

Our pick, and what it costs you to take it

Our pick is Art & See, and this is a judgment rather than a calculation. Two things put it first for us. It names a premium ground — "Belgian linen canvas. Professional-grade oil paints. Archival stretcher bars" — where five of the eight stores name no fibre at all or name cotton. And it photographs the finished painting and emails it for your approval before anything is dispatched, refining it at no cost until it matches, which is the single step that turns buying an unseen made-to-order object from a gamble into a decision. Add a published lead time of two to three weeks (four for complex work, eight for very large), custom sizes and orientation changes on request, framed variants priced on the page, and free worldwide shipping with the plainest customs paragraph in the trade.

Now the bill for that pick, in the same breath. Its refund policy is the weakest part of the offer: the published ladder is refinement first, then store credit, and "cash refunds, where applicable, are issued at our discretion", with return requests capped at one per customer per 365 days and frames sold final sale. Seven people have reviewed it publicly on Trustpilot — not a bad score, an absence of evidence. It does not name the country its paintings are painted in, only that the origin varies with the artist. It is beaten on price at every size by workshops in Dafen selling direct and by overstockArt, which starts the same painting at $99. And its catalogue, at 37,978 counted products, is smaller than the 40,000 Reproduction Gallery advertises. Read this paragraph next to the one above and decide for yourself; that is why both are printed.

Where the measured criteria disagree with us, we print that too. On the ten criteria in the table below, HandmadePiece has the strongest row of the eight — it is the only store that states the weight of its canvas in grams, it matches the approval photograph, it fits frames up to 60 by 60 inches, and it carries 4.9 on Trustpilot from 1,316 reviews, more outside corroboration than the other seven stores combined. We rank it second because it will not say which country its paintings come from, and because a store that publishes a canvas weight in grams and then declines to name a continent is asking for more trust than it gives. That is our judgment; the row is right there for you to disagree with.

Third is BrushWiz, which beats our pick on paperwork — it names its studio in Xiamen, splits processing days from shipping days, and publishes its return exceptions rather than burying them — but paints on 100% cotton fibre rather than linen, and excludes framed and oversized work from that 90-day return.

How we ranked them

The ranking and the ratings on this page are ours. They are an editorial judgment, not a computed score, and no average decides them. What forms that judgment is the ten criteria below, each measured from a public page with the URL and the date recorded, and three of them weigh most: whether the store photographs the finished painting and lets you approve it before it ships, whether it says what the canvas and the paints actually are, and whether it publishes how long the work will take. Three rules matter enough to state here. Price is not a criterion — a cheap painting from a store that will not show you a photograph is not a bargain, so prices sit in their own table further down. A cell we cannot establish is left unscored rather than set to zero, because imputing a zero for something nobody could look up is a fabricated number dressed as caution; every one of the eighty cells below is scored from a page we read on 2026-09-05, and the only blanks are the five Trustpilot profiles too small to count. And where our judgment and the measured criteria disagree, both are printed — the table is not a ranking, it is the evidence you would use to argue with ours.

Read the rows, not a total — there is no total. Nobody is strong on everything, and the shape of a row says more than any single figure: TOPofART has the best canvas and the worst service, overstockArt the fastest delivery and the least said about materials, Reproduction Gallery the largest catalogue and no frames at all. Our pick has two tens and a five in the returns column, and we would rather you saw the five than took our word for the tens.

1. Art & See — Editors’ rating 9.0

Overview. Our pick. 37,978 counted products on one seven-step price ladder, from $249.95 to $1,299.95. Strengths: Belgian linen named as the ground, a photograph of the finished painting emailed for approval with free refinement, published processing of two to three weeks, custom sizes and orientation changes, framed variants priced on the page, free worldwide shipping with the clearest customs paragraph here. Weaknesses: cash refunds at the studio's discretion with store credit as the default, one return request per customer per 365 days, frames final sale, seven Trustpilot reviews, no country named, and catalogue reproductions ship rolled. 2. HandmadePiece — Editors’ rating 8.6

Overview. Trading since 1999, working with a network of more than 100 commissioned artists. Strengths: heavy-duty linen at 400gsm, photo approval with unlimited revisions, more than 500 frames fitted ready to hang up to 60 by 60 inches, and 4.9 from 1,316 Trustpilot reviews. Weaknesses: no country of origin anywhere on the site, nothing published about import duty, and a shipping-delivery page that would not open for us. 3. BrushWiz — Editors’ rating 8.0

Overview. The best-documented store in the trade: around eighty answered questions covering origin, duties, wrap styles and return exceptions. Strengths: names its studio in Xiamen, publishes 14 to 21 days processing plus 5 to 8 days transit, three wrap styles, free worldwide shipping with no size or destination exceptions. Weaknesses: cotton canvas, a 90-day return that excludes framed and 40-inch-plus work, up to 50% restocking outside the conditions, and only five Trustpilot reviews. 4. 1st Art Gallery — Editors’ rating 7.4

Overview. Trading since 2003, claiming more than 300,000 orders filled. Strengths: the strongest approval wording in the trade, a true gallery wrap with the sides painted, thirteen frames priced before checkout, custom sizes to 95 inches, and 4.9 from 691 reviews. Weaknesses: the only store of the eight that never names its canvas fibre at all, no country of production, a 365-day refund that keeps about $35 of shipping and excludes custom orders, approved portraits and frames, and the most expensive framed small canvas here. 5. Reproduction Gallery — Editors’ rating 6.6

Overview. The deepest catalogue in the trade — more than 40,000 paintings across 700 artists — trading since 1996. Strengths: names its studio in Thailand, paints to 225 cm on the shortest side, five painted-border options, Winsor and Newton oils named, 24/7 live chat. Weaknesses: no framing or stretching at all, no approval photograph, a 45-day guarantee that sits on the same page as a 7-day returns instruction, and 24 Trustpilot reviews for a thirty-year-old business. 6. overstockArt — Editors’ rating 6.4

Overview. A Wichita, Kansas operation holding hand-painted oils in stock rather than making them to order. Strengths: dispatch within 24 hours and delivery in 3 to 5 business days, the cheapest verified entry price here at $99, frames made in-house with free stretching, a staffed US phone line, and a 45-day guarantee with a cash-refund option. Weaknesses: no approval photograph on catalogue stock, international shipping quoted only after you order, no canvas fibre and no painting origin stated, and 3.7 on Trustpilot from 169 reviews. 7. TOPofART — Editors’ rating 5.2

Overview. A Sofia workshop that behaves like a studio rather than a shop, and publishes 302 videos of its own painters at work. Strengths: linen stated twice, academically trained European artists, prices set per painting rather than per square inch, sizes held to the original's proportions. Weaknesses: will not frame or stretch an oil at all, no gallery wrap, 14-day returns "entirely at our discretion", no approval photograph, and $1,117 for one Starry Night. 8. ArtsHeaven — Editors’ rating 3.9, and offline

Overview. Do not order: artsheaven.com did not resolve on 2026-09-05, with Cloudflare's public resolver reporting no reachable authority for the domain, and the last Internet Archive capture dated 2026-01-03. Strengths, as last published: named its canvas as 100% cotton, printed the destinations where free shipping stopped applying, explained import duty properly, and sold a matched-colour gallery wrap at plus 15% on the product page. Weaknesses: no approval photograph, 15% deducted from every refund, no frames or stretching at any size, no Trustpilot profile, no stated origin. Best for: nobody, until the domain comes back. What the same painting costs at each store

Across this table the spread is a little over six to one, $179 to $1,117 — and once you add the $99 that overstockArt charges for an 8 by 10 inch canvas, eleven to one across the market. Almost none of it is explained by the picture. It is explained by the canvas, by whether a human photographs the work before it ships, by who pays the courier, and by whether the painting arrives ready to hang. What none of them do well

• Nobody publishes the artist. Not one of the eight names the person who will paint your picture, or lets you choose. Portrait studios in adjacent trades do this routinely.
• Six of eight will not tell you what country the painting comes from. Only BrushWiz and Reproduction Gallery say it plainly; TOPofART lets you work it out from a company address. For an object you are importing, that is the single most useful fact and the one most often withheld.
• Nobody photographs the back of the canvas. Stretcher quality, staple work and the priming visible at the edges are what separate a good reproduction from a cheap one, and no store shows them.
• Struck-through prices are everywhere and mean nothing. Two stores run a permanent 50% sale; one runs a countdown that resets. A price that has never been charged is not a discount, it is decoration.
• Three of eight name linen, two name cotton, and three name neither. Meanwhile "museum quality" appears on all eight sites and is not a defined term anywhere — see museum quality oil painting reproductions.
• Return terms are written for the seller. Discretion clauses, restocking charges up to 50%, refunds less 15%, exclusions for framed and oversized work, one claim per customer per year. Made-to-order work justifies some of this; it does not justify all of it.

How to order safely: a checklist

1. 1.Get the canvas in writing. Ask whether it is linen or cotton, and at what weight. If the answer is "canvas", you have learned something.
2. 2.Ask where it will be painted. Not where the company is registered — where the brush touches the cloth. Two of eight publish it; the rest will usually answer by email.
3. 3.Confirm there is an approval photograph, and ask what happens if you do not reply to it. One store ships anyway after ten days, and says so.
4. 4.Read the return exclusions before choosing a frame. Framed work is excluded from the return policy at two of these stores, and frames are final sale at a third.
5. 5.Check the shipping figure in the basket, not the banner. One store says free shipping on the product page and quotes fees in the FAQ; another quotes international shipping only after you order.
6. 6.Budget for finishing. If the painting ships rolled, you still have to stretch and frame it. overstockArt's own FAQ puts local stretching at $20 to $40; framing is a local quote nobody here publishes, and the stores that do frame charge $250 to $623 for it. On a small canvas that second bill can rival the price of the painting.
7. 7.Pay by card or PayPal, never by bank transfer. A chargeback window is the only real recourse if a store stops answering — as one in this survey has.
8. 8.Screenshot the terms on the day you order. Policies change, and the version you agreed to is the one you will need to quote back.
