How much do oil painting reproductions cost?

Define one comparable order first

A price can only answer “how much?” once the painting and the order are defined. Use one reference image, the same image dimensions, the same delivery format and one destination. A rolled 24 × 30 inch canvas and a framed 24 × 36 inch painting are different offers, even if both appear in a column labelled “about 30 inches”. This guide was revised on 18 September 2026. It provides a comparison method; it does not claim a fresh basket of equivalent live prices.

Add the charges that belong to your order

Start with the price for the selected painting and variant, after any discount actually applicable to that order. Then add each separately charged component once: support upgrade, mounting, frame, packaging, delivery, confirmed taxes or fees, and local finishing. If a component is already included in a bundle, mark it included; do not add it again. If the seller has not supplied an amount, leave it unknown rather than treating an empty cell as zero.

Use confirmed subtotal + unresolved items until all necessary amounts are known. For example, an amount payable to the seller may be fully stated while the cost of stretching a rolled canvas locally is not. You can compare what each seller charges today, but you cannot yet compare what it will cost to hang each painting. Keep optional choices separate too: an upgraded frame is not a hidden charge if you deliberately choose it and the basic order can be completed without it.

Keep the quotation in its original currency. If you need a converted planning total, record the conversion date, rate and any separately quoted payment fee; do not silently replace one currency symbol with another. The amount debited by a card provider can depend on its terms. This worksheet does not supply an exchange rate or assume that every buyer pays the same amount after conversion. Preserve the seller’s original total next to your planning figure.

The same arithmetic applies whether you compare two shops or two sizes at one shop. Save the selected options as well as the visible price: a screenshot of a starting-price banner without its dimensions cannot reproduce the quote. Record whether the basket contains one artwork or several, because shipping and order-level discounts may be shared. If the seller later updates the offer, keep the revised date and replace the superseded comparison rather than blending the two versions.

Check dimensions, crop and delivery format

Specify whether the dimensions describe the painted image, the whole loose cloth, the stretched canvas or the outside of the frame. Record width and height, orientation and units. If the requested proportions differ from the reference, ask how the studio proposes to resolve that difference before comparing a price. Cropping, adding a border and changing the dimensions are different instructions, and a lower quote may simply cover a different composition or finish.

A rolled canvas may require a separate local quote before it is ready to hang. Reproduction Gallery’s FAQ states that its paintings ship rolled rather than stretched or framed. Its delivery offer therefore should not be treated as a finished-frame quotation. For any seller, ask how much spare cloth is supplied for mounting and give that information to the framer. Price divided by painted area is a descriptive calculation, not a quality score or a reason to buy a larger painting than your wall can accommodate. A larger size can cost less per square inch while costing more in total and requiring different framing, packaging or handling. Use area only after confirming comparable proportions and inclusions. Do not extrapolate a custom-size quotation by drawing a straight line between two catalogue prices unless the seller explicitly uses that pricing method.

Separate production, approval and delivery time

Record at least three stages: when the painting can be shown for approval, when it is expected to dispatch, and when the carrier expects delivery. Winsor & Newton’s drying guidance explains that drying varies by colour range, pigment, film thickness and conditions; a headline number of days is not proof of the medium or number of layers. Ask whether the offered schedule includes revisions and whether a deadline is an estimate or a specific commitment.

• Production estimate: What starts the clock—payment, acceptance of the reference or final specifications? Is the item already in stock or being painted to order?
• Approval: Will the preview show your finished item? Which changes are included, how are requests recorded, and what happens if you do not approve?
• Dispatch: Is the quoted date before or after drying, packing and any framing? Keep this separate from delivery to your address.
• Delivery: Record the destination and service. A carrier estimate after dispatch is not the same promise as an order-to-door lead time.
• Extra work: Ask whether unusual size, a custom composition, surface effects or changes after approval affect either price or timing. Leave the impact unknown until answered.

What the published policies add to the quote

Policies can explain what the headline price omits, but they do not supply the price of an unselected product. The examples below were checked against the named sellers’ public documents on 18 September 2026. They are documentary comparisons, not records of orders we placed or service outcomes we experienced. Save the terms that apply to your particular order, especially when a product page and a general policy use different language.

Do not reverse-engineer a studio’s labour bill from a statutory minimum wage, a guessed country or a guessed number of painting hours. Those assumptions do not establish who painted an object, how long it took, what they were paid or whether a retail price is truthful. This revision removes that cost model. A price comparison can document offers and inclusions without making claims about a seller’s wages, profit or sourcing that the evidence does not support.

Origin also needs a precise question. The seller’s office, the artist’s location and the place of dispatch may be different. Ask for the shipping origin relevant to the order when you need it for a delivery or import estimate. If that answer is unavailable, mark it unconfirmed. Do not infer origin from the website language, payment currency, company name or a photograph of a studio.

Keep taxes and return exposure outside a guessed total

Tax and carrier charges depend on the actual transaction and destination. As one jurisdiction-specific example, UK government guidance on goods sent from abroad explains that the VAT calculation can include postage, packaging, insurance and duty. This is a reason to check the applicable rules and quotation; it is not a tax-rate estimate for every reproduction or country. This guide no longer applies a single artwork rate to a hypothetical painting without a confirmed classification and taxable base.

A return window alone does not tell you whether the remedy is cash, replacement, refinement or store credit. The approval and returns checklist compares these distinctions and the exceptions found in actual policies. A longer window can still come with narrower remedies or excluded components. Include that exposure in your decision without pretending it is a precisely priced expected loss.

Questions when an offer is unusually cheap or expensive

An unusual price is a prompt to verify the specification. It is not proof of a print, underpaid work, premium materials or superior skill. Likewise, a sale banner does not establish a saving for your particular order. Compare the amount you can actually pay for the selected variant with another equivalent offer, and preserve the date rather than presenting an observed promotion as permanent.

1. 1.Confirm the format. Does the listing promise a painting, a print, or a print with added material? Save its exact description and ask if the description is ambiguous.
2. 2.Confirm dimensions and finish. Check the selected size and whether the canvas is rolled, stretched or framed. A starting price may describe a different variant.
3. 3.Confirm any additional work. Ask whether custom proportions, metallic effects, borders or revisions change the quote. Do not infer a process from its price.
4. 4.Confirm approval and cancellation. Record the relevant stage and time window; a photo preview does not automatically create an unconditional right to cancel after production.
5. 5.Confirm exclusions. Custom sizes, frames, altered goods and clearance products can have different terms. Ask which applies before treating all offers as equal.
6. 6.Confirm the final payable amount. Keep unknown delivery, local finishing and import charges visible. If the seller only provides a quote on request, that is missing price data, not evidence of a dishonest pricing method.

Use the total and the terms to decide

Choose the offer that meets the specification and terms you need at a total you can establish. A cost table should make differences visible rather than forcing a winner from incomplete data.
